Troubleshooting

1. Which versions of Microsoft Excel can bpmTraverse be used on?
2. Where should I save the bpmTraverse add-in?
3. My security settings appear to be stopping bpmTraverse from running on my machine.
4. I'm running Excel 2003 and Excel 2007. Can I still use bpmTraverse?

1. Which versions of Microsoft Excel can bpmTraverse be used on?

The following compatibility issues apply to bpmTraverse:

  • bpmTraverse can only be used on Microsoft Excel 2000 or newer;
  • The bpmTraverse 2003.xla add-in will work on all versions of Microsoft Excel from Excel 2000 onwards, but it is recommended that the bpmTraverse 2007+.xlam add-in be used if using Microsoft Excel 2007 or newer; and
  • The bpmTraverse 2007+.xlam add-in will not work on versions of Microsoft Excel 2003 or older.

Note that bpmTraverse was upgraded during July 2011 to facilitate use on the 64-bit version of Microsoft Excel 2010, which was previously not supported.

2. Where should I save the bpmTraverse add-in?

The bpmTraverse add-in can be saved to any folder on your computer which you are able to access to open files.

If you would like bpmTraverse to be usable by multiple users on your machine, the add-in should be saved to a commonly-accessible folder such as C:\Program Files\bpmTraverse\bpmTraverse 2007+.xlam. This assumes that all users have read access to the C:\Program files folder, and may require that you have administrator rights to you machine.

If you do not have administator rights to your machine, or would like only your user account to be able to access the tool, you should ideally save bpmTraverse to the recommended Microsoft AddIns folder for your user account. This differs for different versions of Windows, as shown below (for the 2007+ version of bpmTraverse):

  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\AddIns\bpmTravese 2007+.xlam.
  • Vista/Windows 7: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns\bpmTravese 2007+.xlam.

3. My security settings appear to be stopping bpmTraverse from running on my machine.

bpmTraverse will always run with the default Excel macro security settings, meaning you will not need to make any changes to the way Excel handles security by default.

However if you have made changes to the Excel macro security settings, you will need to make sure that all installed add-ins are fully trusted in order to use the bpmTraverse add-in:

  • If using Microsoft Excel 2003 or older, go to Tools | Macro Security, activate the Trusted Publishers tab and and check the box next to Trust all installed add-ins and templates. You are not required to lower the security level in the Security Level tab or confer other rights to the bpmTraverse add-in.
  • If using Microsoft Excel 2007 or newer, click on the Office Button, click the Excel Options button, select the Trust Center tab, click the Trust Center Settings..., select the Add-ins tab and ensure that none of the Add-ins check boxes are checked.

4. I'm running Excel 2003 and Excel 2007. Can I still use bpmTraverse?

Yes - bpmTraverse has been designed to run on every version of Microsoft Excel from Excel 2000 onwards. If running Excel 2003 and Excel 2007, we recommend that you:

  1. Download bpmTraverse 2003.xla and specify this add-in as the bpmTraverse add-in to be used within Microsoft Excel 2003; and
  2. Download bpmTraverse 2007+.xlam and specify this add-in as the bpmTraverse add-in to be used within Microsoft Excel 2007.
